چکیده

Assuming the observed pulsar velocities to originate during asymmetric collapse of stellar cores, we compute the amplitude of gravitational waves emitted during type II and Ib supernova explosions and their detection rate from within a distance of 30 Mpc. At the rms-level of advanced laser interferometers h ≈ 10−22 at frequencies 300− 1000 Hz the expected rate is about 1 per year.

Pulsar recoil by large-scale anisotropies in supernova explosions.

Assuming that the neutrino luminosity from the neutron star core is sufficiently high to drive supernova explosions by the neutrino-heating mechanism, we show that low-mode (l=1,2) convection can develop from random seed perturbations behind the shock. A slow onset of the explosion is crucial, requiring the core luminosity to vary slowly with time, in contrast to the burstlike exponential decay...

Runaway Velocities of Stellar Components Originating from Disrupted Binaries via Asymmetric Supernova Explosions

We present analytical formulae to calculate the dynamical effects of asymmetric supernova explosions which disrupt a binary system. These formulae are applied to Monte Carlo simulations of asymmetric supernovae in a large number of binaries. The expected velocities of runaway neutron stars and companion stars are calculated as a function of separation and component masses, prior to the explosio...

Global Anisotropies in Supernova Explosions and Pulsar Recoil

Observations show that neutron stars can have space velocities much higher than those of their progenitors. On average pulsar birth velocities are in the range of 200-500 km/s and significant fraction might move with more than 1000 km/s (see [1] and references therein). The powerful and highly variable acceleration mechanism that leads to the measured velocities is still unclear. It is possible...

Multidimensional supernova simulations with approximative neutrino transport I. Neutron star kicks and the anisotropy of neutrino-driven explosions in two spatial dimensions

By means of two-dimensional (2D) simulations we study hydrodynamic instabilities during the first seconds of neutrino-driven supernova explosions. We use a PPM hydrodynamics code, supplemented with an approximative, gray, nonequilibrium treatment of radial neutrino transport, based on an analytic integration of the neutrino number and energy equations. Tests show that this treatment reproduces ...

Velocities of pulsars and neutrino oscillations

We show that two long-standing astrophysical puzzles may have a simultaneous solution. Neutrino oscillations, biased by the magnetic field, alter the shape of the neutrinosphere in a cooling protoneutron star emerging from the supernova collapse. The resulting anisotropy in the momentum of outgoing neutrinos can be the origin of the observed proper motions of pulsars. Since the birth velocities...
